The DAISY Foundation was founded by the family of J. Patrick Barnes to recognize nurses and the extraordinary care that they experienced as a family. They wanted to say āthank youā to nurses everywhere by establishing a recognition program, and today, The DAISY Award is given to honor the super-human work nurses do for patients and families every day.We are thrilled to share that Danielle Emert , BSN, RN, 7E is the latest DAISY Award Honoree for UT Medical Center! Here is what one of Danielle's patients had to say about the care she provided:"Danielle was filled with compassion and kindness. Her follow-through, patience, tenacity, and accuracy were spot on. I don't know what I would have done without her help navigating through this experience."Thank you, Danielle for sharing your expertise, dedication and compassion to our patients! Please help us congratulate her on this outstanding honor.https://bit.ly/445rlGU#DAISYAward #nurses #DAISYfoundation #UTMCfamily #nursing

At age 37, after experiencing symptoms for two years, Tim was diagnosed with Parkinsonās Disease. An avid musician, playing the piano was Timās first clue that something was wrong. āI started noticing that my right hand was slowing down,ā he said. āThe slowness and stiffness made it hard to type on the computer as well,ā It took two years and four doctors to decipher that the cause was Parkinsonās, so at first, Tim felt somewhat relieved. āAt least I knew what it was. Now, how do we fix it?,ā he said. Over the next three years, Timās symptoms continued to get worse, and the number of medications he was taking increased. During that time, he became aware of The Cole Center for Parkinsonās & Movement Disorders, part of the Brain & Spine Institute at UT Medical Center. āI was so grateful when friends connected me with Dr. Shadi Barbu and The Cole Center,ā Tim said. āNot having to drive three hours to Nashville was a game changer, and I absolutely love Dr. Barbu!ā Timās disease ā as Parkinsonās normally does ā continued to progress. Instead of just his right hand and arm, it was now affecting his right leg and foot as well. By early 2023, Dr. Barbu noticed difficulties in his left side and speech, too. They continued to combat it with nine pills a day, physical therapy and speech therapy. Then, he and Dr. Barbu began to discuss a more serious treatment option: deep brain stimulation, or DBS. This is a brain surgery which allows a small generator placed in the chest to send continuous pulses of electricity to carefully chosen spots in the brain. This past December, two electrodes were implanted in Timās brain by neurosurgeon Carter Gerard, MD and his team. āI canāt believe how smoothly it went,ā Tim said. āI stayed just one night in the ICU and was home the next day.ā A week later, Tim had a second surgery to place a neurostimulator in his chest. After the procedures, Tim had several follow-up appointments to finetune the electrodes. At each appointment, Dr. Barbu increased the electrical signal and gradually lowered Timās medications. āItās been a process, but Iām now down to just one pill a day,ā he said. āItās incredible already, and I think itās going to get even better. Iām even working back into my church music teams on the piano and the drums.āDeep brain stimulation has given Tim hope to fight Parkinsonās for many years to come. āI know the disease is going to get worse over time,ā he said, ābut itās incredible to know that Dr. Barbu can continue to adjust the device for years to come without additional surgeries. For anyone struggling with this disease, Iād 100% recommend this procedure at the hands of Dr. Gerard and Dr. Barbu. They provided great care and put us at ease throughout the entire process.āThanks for sharing your story, Tim, and weāre so happy youāre back to playing the music you love.#ParkinsonsAwareness #ParkinsonsDisease #Together4PD #Parkinsons
