Verstappen breaks record with 10th straight win

Red Bull's Max Verstappen broke Ferrari's valiant challenge to set an all-time record for consecutive wins with victory in the Italian Grand Prix.
The Dutchman was held back by pole-winner Carlos Sainz's Ferrari for 14 laps but his pressure paid off when an error from the Spaniard gave him his chance.
Sainz locked his brakes into the first chicane and that allowed Verstappen to pass the Ferrari into the second chicane at Monza.
Sainz, after forcefully holding on to second place from team-mate Charles Leclerc, was left to fend off Verstappen's team-mate Sergio Perez for second place.

See you next year, Europe.
It wasn't meant to be for Carlos Sainz at the home of Ferrari but the Spaniard put up a brave fight against the unstoppable Red Bull.
Max Verstappen has a new record of 10 wins in a row to his name but I don't think anyone would bet against the reigning world champion extending that achievement.
Will another driver be able to crack the code and beat the Dutchman in the final eight races of the season? Maybe a roll of the dice at the inaugural Las Vegas event in November may produce an unlikely winner?
Where are we off to next? It's the Singapore Grand Prix!
Get yourselves back here on Friday, 15 September for coverage of first and second practice at Marina Bay Street Circuit. The opening session goes green at 10:30 BST.
See you soon!
'Carlos defending like his life depended on it' - Horner
Red Bull have become the first team to win 15 consecutive races in Formula 1. Team principal Christian Horner told Sky Sports: "We had to do it the hard way, the Ferraris were very quick today and we saw that in quali yesterday. You know Carlos was defending like his life depended on it so first of all Max had to get that pass done and then we were able to pull out a gap and I think they were just a little bit harder on their tyres than we were.
"Checo was making some great moves to get that one-two, which of course gives Max 10 victories in a row which is breaking a record from Sebastian (Vettel) 10 years ago, which is an incredible moment."

The home fans at least got to see one of their drivers on the podium in the bright Italian sunshine.
So glad this was a dry race.

Carlos Sainz, who earns his first podium of the 2023 seasonon Ferrari’s home soil in Monza, said: “Very tough, very tough it cannot getany tougher to what it was today, honestly the whole race pushing very veryhard to keep the Red Bulls behind and that obviously made me use the rear tyrea lot trying to keep up with them and trying to keep them behind, but in theend I am paying a bit of price with the rear tyres but I did everything I couldto defend and race all the cars that I could and brought it home in the end inP3 but it was a tough one.”
On his battle with his team-mate Charles Leclerc, he added: “Itwas tough hard racing, it’s always been a pleasure to race Charles whenever we’vehad the chance and today was the same, a great racer same with Max and Checo. Wehave fun out there today and I hope you guys enjoyed it.”
On his end result of P3, he said: “We just need to keepworking on our pace, on our tyre understanding and I think today it was alwayshard we were wearing the tyres a bit more and we were just lacking a bit ofpace, but it’s definitely a big step forward compared to Zandvoort and this weekendwe’ve been best of the rest which is a good result for the team given thecirc*mstances.”

'P2 was the maximum we could achieve today' - Perez
Sergio Perez who finished second at the Italian Grand Prix: "I think it [P2] was the maximum we could achieve today. We were lacking some top speed today. It was hard toovertake, we had some great exits but it was not enough.
"To get through Charles and Carlos is pretty insane because I had to usemy tyres.
"I really thought, especially in the beginning, I couldn’t get close to Charles, I put the pressure on Charles then Carlos. It was a lot of fighting with him but in the end we managed to get p2.
"I think we've done a lot of progress on the set up. I'm feelingmore comfortable in the car, we will see the progress in the next races."

On the rest of the race, he said: “I just tried to staypatient, it was still a very long race I could see that he (Carlos) was struggling a loton the rear tyres so I just had to pick my moment.”

Ok, same race winner, but the Italian Grand Prix put a decent show, do you think?
Time to hear what the top three drivers thought. Let's start with Mr. M. Verstappen...

Any ideas how we do that? Unless something almighty throws the Dutchman off his stride, I think we'll be seeing Verstappen on the top step of the podium at the remaining eight races.

I'm sure Sebastian Vettel is smiling somewhere. The German four-time world champion has held the all-time consecutive wins record since 2013.
Cooldown room time. Verstappen has clocked the fight between Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz on the screen. "Was that the last lap?!" says the Dutchman. Yes, yes it was Max.

I think Leclerc is going to have something to say about moving under braking there because he sold Sainz the dummy, he was on the outside, switched to the inside and as soon as he did that, his team-mate copied him.
