This super easy Crock Pot Cabbage recipe tastes just like grandma used to make! Tender cabbage with the savory flavor of bacon and onions makes the perfect side dish for any family dinner.
Cris here. One of my absolute favorite side dishes growing up as a kid was cooked cabbage. Mom would often make it on the grill during the summer and in the microwave during the winter. I absolutely LOVED it.
Over the years I have made it several different ways in the crock pot, but after having it in a restaurant the other day it got my recipe development wheels a turning and this version was the result. The family raved about it and begged me to make it this way from now on. The kicker is, it is SO simple to throw together so I knew I HAD to share it with you.

Crock Pot Cabbage Recipe: This super easy recipe tastes just like grandma used to make! Tender cabbage with the savory flavor of bacon and onions makes the perfect side dish for any family dinner.
Ingredients for Crock Pot Cabbage Recipe
- 1 small head of cabbage- cored and chopped
- ⅔ cup real bacon crumbles ( or 8 slices cooked crisp and chopped)
- 15 oz jar pearl onion, drained
- 8 cups chicken broth
- ¼ cup butter- sliced
- salt and pepper
How to make Cabbage in a Crock Pot
- Place your cabbage in your crock pot
- Top with remaining ingredients
- Cover and cook on high for 4 -6 hours or until cabbage is tender.
Crock Pot Cabbage Notes:
- I used one of my favorite 6 qt slow cookers to whip this up. You are going to want a large slow cooker because it will be quite full until the cabbage cooks down.
- We like our cabbage VERY tender, so we tend to cook it longer. If you like your cabbage a little firmer, just reduce your cooking time.
- We LOVE using real bacon crumbles to skip the step of frying bacon. If you would prefer to cook your own bacon, go for it.
- Similarly, we LOVE the flavor those little baby pearl onionsin the jar bring to the table. You can usually find them in vegetable aisle or the same aisle with the pickles. However, if you want to use regular onions instead, I would just chop one up and cook them a little in your bacon grease before adding to the cabbage.
- As with any of our recipes, calorie counts and nutritional information varies greatly depending on which products you choose to use when cooking this dish.
- All slow cookers cook differently, so cooking times are always a basic guideline and should always be tested first in your own slow cooker and time adjusted as needed.

I love your “we love hearing from you” note. Is it just me or does it seem like they don’t teach manners any longer? Very sad. I’m cooking this tomorrow. Can’t wait. 🙂

This was sooo good. I let mine cook for 6 hours. I added chopped bacon, onion and bell pepper. My family loved it!Reply
Margie says
If I were to cook this on Low, rather than High, would it be 7-9 hours?
Reply
Cris says
Hi Margie! Depending on your slow cooker it would probably go for 6 to 8 hrs.
eva says
Turned out great. Only has 4 cups of broth, also dumped in a package of noodle soup and 4 cups of water. Cooked while at work (so between 6 and 7 hours)Reply
Cris says
So glad you enjoyed it, Eva!

Trying this recipe and love that it works in the crockpot. With the outside temp of 106 the less heat in the kitchen the better. I read the earlier comments so I’m seeing how the 4 cups of broth work out. Love these old timey real good food recipes!! Thanks Ms. Cris.

Just printed this recipe to try tomorrow, but I must admit I burst out laughing when I saw “coupons” listed in the ingredients on the printed version…as if cabbage isn’t already high enough in fiber! XD
I’m making a big batch in my large cooker because I’m going to a potluck dinner, so using both purple and green cabbage to make it colorful! Also chock full of anti-oxidants!
Can’t post a rating yet…haven’t tried it!

I used red cabbage. It made the broth dark (so it looked more like beef broth than chicken) but still tasted great.
Margee says
This sounds both delicious and easy to make. Thank you!But I have one question. In the ingredients list, what is meant by “coupons”?

I was wondering the same thing…

Try substituting TURKEY broth for
the chicken broth.Reply
Cris says
Yum!
Sharin says
I thought 8 cups seemed like a lot also, so I used just 1 box of broth (4 cups) and it still had plenty of liquid, and turned out perfectly!Reply
Veronica says
So glad to hear this because I too thought 8 cups of liquid was too much…. thanks for sharing!
Sue says
Could you substitute frozen baby onions for the jarred ones??
Reply
Cris says
Hi Sue! I don’t see why not! Enjoy!
Deb says
I’m definitely going to try this! LOVE cabbage! I’ve never tried the jar onions so that’s exciting to try something new. So, how would your mom make it in the microwave? Did it still get REALLY tender? I’ve only ever boiled cabbage, but I love it.Reply
Cris says
Hi Deb!
She just placed her chopped cabbage in a microwave safe bowl and just covered the bottom with water. She would then add a stick of butter and salt/pepper. She microwaved for 6 minutes at a time– stirring in between– until the cabbage reached the tenderness desired. Enjoy!

Douglas D Rakowsky says
8 cup broth with the liquid from the cabbage seem like a lot is this dish mostly liquid
Reply
Cris says
Hi Doug-There is definitely a lot of liquid, but I wouldn’t say mostly. This recipe is a boiled cabbage, so you will serve up with a slotted spoon like a lot of boiled veggies. Although I do have to say the broth is quite tasty, so if you to eat it like a soup I wouldn’t blame ya! Enjoy!
