My advice as a happily married man of 20 years. Choose someone who is kind, loyal and recognise that looks fade. I look at my wife and see only the girl I met when she was 20. To me she hasn't aged a day. Find someone who has interests, some that match yours, others that are different. Obviously it is important that you enjoy doing things together, but it is just as important to have interests that allow to have satisfying time apart. Kindness is a must, and they must have an identical view on monogamy or whatever arrangements you want. For my wife and I loyalty to each other is a must. But if you love something it is both easy and enjoyable. I've not looked at another woman since I met her. Kindness, being kind to each means forgiving and helping each other. Anyone who can't be kind can't be in a successful relationship. Finally you must have a similar attitude to work and money. Otherwise there is a power imbalance and one person will start to exploit the other. Successful long-term relationships are the joining of equals

Dating is just awful. Especially after a failed marriage. I actively tried to push my (now) husband away. I mean, I pulled out ALL the cards; I had 2 kids, he had never had children, I lived in another STATE, I was having medical issues- I mean, I literally gave him every opportunity to NOT have to get involved with me. I guess I just thought that since he hadn't had kids (and I cannot have them anymore) that I would be ruining his chances at having his own family. What I failed to understand, though, was that he saw my sons and I as HIS family, and that he truly loved me for me. That's it. We've been married 10 years now and he loves my sons like they've been his kids all along. He gets along with my ex husband so well that we joke that they have a "bromance". He can't wait to be called "popo" by our "one day" grandkids. The boys are 1) in college and 2) in another state, but he wants to move wherever they end up so we can be close by. Continued*

When he asked me to marry him, the ring he gave me was tailored from his own design; a row of small diamonds on either side of the main stone (meaning he and I) and a fleur de lis on two sides of the main stone (meaning my Louisiana boys) with the main stone meaning the bringing together of all 4 of us as a family. I can't believe I tried to get him to walk away, but honestly, I just thought he would one day resent being "stuck" with me. He's amazing and every day I thank the good Lord for bringing him into my life. <3

I guess I just thought that since he hadn't had kids (and I cannot have them anymore) that I would be ruining his chances at having his own family. What I failed to understand, though, was that he saw my sons and I as HIS family, and that he truly loved me for me. That's it. We've been married 10 years now and he loves my sons like they've been his kids all along. He gets along with my ex husband so well that we joke that they have a "bromance". He can't wait to be called "popo" by our "one day" grandkids. The boys are 1) in college and 2) in another state, but he wants to move wherever they end up so we can be close by. Continued*

When he asked me to marry him, the ring he gave me was tailored from his own design; a row of small diamonds on either side of the main stone (meaning he and I) and a fleur de lis on two sides of the main stone (meaning my Louisiana boys) with the main stone meaning the bringing together of all 4 of us as a family. I can't believe I tried to get him to walk away, but honestly, I just thought he would one day resent being "stuck" with me. He's amazing and every day I thank the good Lord for bringing him into my life. <3
